How we build a closet
A closet that looks good empty and a closet that works when it is loaded are two different pieces of joinery.
San Antonio sits on expansive clay. It swells when it rains and shrinks when it does not, and our rainfall swings hard between the two. That is why doors stick, tile cracks, floors run out of level and gaps open at the trim in houses here. The consequence in a closet is that a factory system either rocks or gets shimmed and hidden behind a filler strip.
We measure the room as it is and scribe the run to it, which is the whole reason ours sit tight to the wall.
Before anything is cut we go through it: how many long hangs, how many pairs of shoes, boots or not, whether you want drawers or open shelving, and what has to be reachable without a step stool.
That conversation is the difference between a closet that looks good empty and one that works full.
The franchise closet companies sell a factory system: parts are ordered, shipped, then assembled in your house. That is why they quote 6 to 12 weeks.
We build ours. Same reason the schedule is shorter and the fit is better.
Closet interiors are usually painted, and ours are no exception. If you want to see this crew’s joinery in bare wood, look at the mudroom benches and built-ins or the millwork.

A system is manufactured in standard widths and assembled in your house. A custom closet is measured, cut and built for the room it goes in. On a wall that is out of plumb, and most are here, that difference is visible from the doorway.
Most of our closets happen inside a primary suite project alongside a bathroom, because the two rooms share a wall and it is one disruption instead of two. They are also taken on their own, and about a week is about a week either way.
